HES @ P4K

The Hearing Education Service (HES) program at P4K @ 109 serves Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in a 12:1:1 self-contained classroom. This program encompasses a Total Communication (TC) philosophy. The Total Communication (TC) philosophy of educating children with hearing loss incorporates all means of communication: sign supports (American Sign Language-ASL and components of signed English), natural gestures, fingerspelling, body language, lip-reading and speech. Supports are provided throughout the day and is individualized based on students’ needs. Students in the TC programs typically wear hearing aids or cochlear implants. In addition, students receive auditory training with Frequency Modulated (FM) equipment, consisting of a microphone and transmitter unit worn by staff members. Our students develop their potential as signing and oral communicators. Each student is encouraged to use their personal mode of communication (PMC) to access the curriculum and to interact with communicative partners throughout the day.
